"I was worried how I would be treated as a female going into a trade, and I was overwhelmed by the amount of love and support everyone has shown me."
the inside scoop…
What does an Apprentice Electrician actually do? I work mostly in people’s homes installing things like new lights, ceiling fans, internet points, camera systems, electric car chargers, smoke detectors, TV antennas etc. Occasionally I work in public spaces too doing similar work.
What does a day in your life at work look like? My typical day is usually at people’s homes installing beautiful feature lighting and patting all their cute pets!!
What's the best part of your job? My favourite part about working as an electrician would be the variety of work. Everyday is different for me, I work with fantastic people who are incredibly supportive and get to install stunning lights like chandeliers!
What made you realise construction could be for you? When I was little I spent a lot of time hanging out with dad and helping him, I didn’t realise how much I enjoyed this type of work until I offered to help a friend who is an electrician one day and absolutely loved doing electrical work and decided to change careers to pursue this passion.
What's something that surprised you about working in construction? I was a bit nervous going into the industry after working for 13 years in a different industry. I was worried how I would be treated as a female going into a trade, and I was overwhelmed by the amount of love and support everyone has shown me.
What's the best thing about working in construction? It is so satisfying getting to see the finished result and how excited the customer is after we install their new lights. I have gained so much confidence in myself and will happily give things a go which previously I would have been terrified to do. I have grown so much in the last 12 months and can’t wait to see where I am in another 12 months.
What do your friends and family think about working in construction? Everyone is incredibly supportive and are so excited that I have found such a passion for the work I am doing.
