"My favourite part is when I can see people who actually use the new space after they have moved from much older, poorer, unsuitable spaces and the impact this can have on individuals and the wider community."

the inside scoop…

What does an Associate Director actually do?
My job involves working with a Sydney team of 80 project managers and leading multiple project programs that are at different stages of construction for multiple clients. This includes projects in early planning seeking funding all the way through construction on site with large teams of professional consultants and builders.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
I'll often do school drop off and head to the office or alternatively I'll work remotely and have meetings on site with the project team which includes the builder, client, stakeholder, consultants. At these meetings we discuss any potential construction issues, safety items, how we're tracking to the project program and budget as well as any upcoming disruptions to the stakeholders' usual operations. I'll have regular check-ins with my team mates to brainstorm ways to progress or solve issues on other projects. I'll also chat with clients about ways to keep providing high quality services or new opportunities.

What's the best part of your job?
My favourite part is when I can see people who actually use the new space after they have moved from much older, poorer, unsuitable spaces and the impact this can have on individuals and the wider community.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I did work experience at a dental surgery which was super boring and then at an Architecture firm which was much more interesting and creative.

What would you tell your high school self about working in construction?
Everyday brings new challenges which keeps me on my toes to continually problem solve and use multiple skills, particularly communication. There are so many pathways within the construction industry that will be suitable as a career depending on your passion and interests. Be confident in your own abilities and say yes to opportunities that you would often shy away from or turn down.

What's something that surprised you about working in construction?
It surprised me how few women are actually in the industry (13%) and there are industry targets to reach 15% by 2030 and while it has improved, it's still a very male dominated environment. Unlike what many might think, you can have a family at the same time as having a career in STEM/construction with many flexible working options and industry targets aiming to close the 18% gender pay gap.

Tell us about a favourite project you're working on.
I'm passionate about projects that impact the learning and education of individuals and the way this can help uncover possibilities for their future.
