THE INSIDE SCOOP…
What does a Deputy Chief Financial Officer actually do? I look after a team of people that manage all aspects of finance, including payments to our subbies, suppliers and people, receipts from our customers, investment of surplus cash, reporting on company results, compliance and tax.
What does a day in your life at work look like? Some tasks / responsibilities are repetitive, others are different every day. The biggest part of my role is leading and motivating the team and assisting with problem solving.
What's the best part of your job? Working with a great diverse group of people.
What made you realise construction could be for you? I enjoy the tangible nature of the end product / output. It is nice to walk by buildings that the company I work for have built.
Who has inspired you in your career? I've been very lucky to have had some wonderful leaders that saw the potential in me that I didn't see myself. They are the leaders I work hard to be like.
Tell us about balancing work with your other interested, or family. In choosing the companies I work for I am very clear about what balance looks like for me; my children are only young for a short period so I want to be there for the moments that are important to them. I love working for an employer that respects that and trusts that as an adult we can manage our time to meet our deliverables without necessarily being in the office 8.30am to 5.30pm everyday. Having an empowered and effective team is also very important as is time management and good communication.
What's something that surprised you about working in construction? The complexities of relationships with subcontractors.
