the inside scoop…

What does a Design Manager actually do?
On projects where the builder is responsible for the design, I manage the design consultants and assist with the finalisation of the design.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
I typically work on site. At the moment I’m working on Fitzroy Sports Centre and Fawkner Leisure Centre. A typical day would start by checking for any emails. Then I check in with the project coordinator to see if they have any design questions. I might then have a meeting or two. After lunch, I try to go for a site walk to check on progress. Then I’ll go back to responding to emails, following up consultants, organise building permits or reviewing design drawings.

What's the best part of your job?
I really enjoy working as part of a diverse team to achieve fantastic built outcomes for the client. In my role I work with the client, various stakeholders, our site team, consultants, and subcontractors.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
When my parents were looking for a new house during primary school, I would sketch renovations after visiting them.

Tell us about a favourite project you're working on.
My favourite project I’ve worked on is Alba Thermal Springs. As an architect working on the project, I got to work on the project during design and construction. It was very exciting seeing the drawings you drew built.

What would you tell your high school self about working in construction?
There are to many different opportunities in construction and you certainly don’t have to know how to use a drill! Whilst working on site may seem intimidating, it’s actually lots of fun and the best way to learn how things are built.
