the inside scoop…

What does a Interior Designer actually do?
I get to manage and create workplaces for big and small businesses. There is a lot of team work, brainstorming, planning and delivery to my role.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
Coffee in the office with the team, then out to a client meeting to present a new design. If I’m lucky I may get called out to a construction site to inspect the progress of a project. Lots of meetings and calls and my absolute favourite, hosting team design workshops where we take over a desk in our office and sketch our design ideas out.

What's the best part of your job?
I get to brainstorm with my team coming up with new and interesting design ideas that haven’t been done before. We then test it with hand sketches and 3D computer models to see if it’s worthwhile exploring further

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I was always very creative as a child and realised I wanted to explore design when I was at high school. Playing the Sims on the computer after school and enjoying building the houses more than playing the actual game.

What would you tell your high school self about working in construction?
Being a woman in a male dominated field is not as scary as you think. You bring a different perspective to the problem solving process

What do your friends and family think about working in construction?
My husband is a builder so he gets what I do on a day to day basis. It’s great being able to chat about our days together. I don’t think my friends fully grasp what I do but I’m working to educate them at every chance I get

What's the best thing about working in construction?
Working with people who have different skills to mine and learning a lot every day
