the inside scoop…

What does a Project Manager actually do?
I support the development of construction projects from start to finish. I advise clients with organising their design brief, budget, and manage architects, designers and builders to bring projects to life. They might be schools, defence bases, laboratories, office, hotels, or civic buildings (like the Sydney Opera House!)

What does a day in your life at work look like?
I might grab coffee with someone in the industry (architects, planners, client) to talk about new potential projects. Then head to the office to chair some workshops with designers and resolve parts of the design of the current project I’m working on! I will also help support my team with other parts of the project we might be working on, like developing a brief, or managing the project budget. I might drop by the Architect's office to workshop some materials or finishes we will use too. If projects are underway in construction, I also might need to undertake a site inspection or talk to the builder about how we resolve something on site. Each day is different and fast paced- there are lots of elements to be across! My favourite part is I’m always learning!

What's the best part of your job?
When I was an architect, I worked on a project for CSIRO which helps deliver new scientific breakthroughs that helps to feed the world!

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I wanted to be a carpenter. I spent my childhood working with my dad who was a tradesman. Really enjoyed making. Would draw houses for hours, but also general landscape painting.

What are you excited about doing in the future, working in construction?
I am excited that we are seeing more diversity in the industry- it means more great ideas and problem solving!

What's something that surprised you about working in construction?
How I have been able to shape my own career and move sideways. I have been many different roles: an Architect, worked as a Design Manager for a builder, as a Principal running an architecture business and now client side as a Project Director. Each of my roles has given me a different experience and knowledge and excitement.

Tell us about a time you made a difference in your work
I led a significant project for the defence force, which created transformational outcomes for young people training in the ADF in regional Australia. It was exciting and meaningful.
