“To be able to look across the skyline and know you were involved in making that happen is very rewarding!”

the inside scoop…

What does a Project Manager actually do?
Work closely with the project team (builders, architects and consultants) to assist in delivering the project on behalf of the client to meet their budget, time and quality needs. This is largely an office based job with regular visits out to site during the construction phase.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
A typical day is in the office holding meetings, talking to various stakeholders and preparing documentation to help progress the project. In the afternoon, there might be a visit out to site to check up on progress. There is always a lot going on and it is engaging to pivot between priorities.

What's the best part of your job?
Seeing the impact your projects can have! For example, working on rural hospitals has been very rewarding in knowing that a regional community is able to access the health care they need and deserve.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I was interested in being involved in an industry where the work is very tangible, to be able to look across the skyline and know you were involved in making that happen is very rewarding!

What would you tell your high school self about working in construction?
Make sure you don't overlook the construction industry as an option, it is not always presented at school and there are loads more pathways than just architect or engineer - make sure you look into all the options within the industry to see if one might be right for you!

What do your friends and family think about you working in construction?
Most of my friends and family express surprise / concern about working in a male dominated industry. While there is still a lot of improvement to be done and progress is being made to improve gender balance in the industry, don't let that put you off. Be part of the positive change and there are lots of great opportunities for women in construction waiting for you.

Tell us about a favourite project you're working on.
I am currently working on the UNSW IASB Fitout Project which I love, it will be a space for the university to teach medical student within a working hospital and for research to be undertaken working closely with clinical staff. This presents an amazing opportunity for the advancement of medical research and outcomes. One of my favourite things about the industry is that the work we do builds a foundation for others to do the important work they do, by us ensuring we get the design and construction right we are putting others on the right path forwards.
