What does a Senior Associate actually do? I help manage the studio to create a fun and safe workplace. In parallel, teaching the team how to be architects through working on real projects.
What does a day in your life at work look like? Checking emails to plan my day around what I need to complete for the week. Meet with my team to talk through what they are working on and see where they need guidance or assistance. A coffee or two of course. Sometimes with a client or consultant. Sometimes to talk through more personal issues or opportunities with my team. Online or in person meetings to discuss project progress with clients or consultants. Internal design review meeting to resolve a challenging problem. End the day with a talk or networking event to extend my knowledge of the industry and create connections with similar-minded people.
What's the best part of your job? It is challenging. I am always learning, and developing management skills. It provides me the opportunity to run projects and project teams.
What made you realise construction could be for you? I loved sculpture creation in art class and thought architecture would be a good way to create large sculptures.
What's the best thing about working in construction? Being able to see the product of your efforts in built form.
Tell us about a favourite project you're working on. Art Gallery and Museum - So exciting to work on a project that a community will use for their entertainment and education for many many years
What would you tell your high school self about working in construction? There are many different roles in construction from design, construction, legal or even accounting. It is a highly social, expressive and rewarding career that you can engage in for your entire working life. And most of all it is fun!
