the inside scoop…

What does a Carpentry Apprentice actually do?
As a carpentry apprentice I am learning more technical skills everyday with new tools and greater exposure to different kinds of builds. There is a lot of problem solving to allow for the perfect fit in joinery. I am able to work on small house sites doing a deck all the way up to a big school or high rise apartment building. Every day is different as each day is a new element of the build.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
My day typically starts at 7am with a tool box talk which is a team meeting to set a plan for the day. After that we all begin our respective tasks commonly working together as a team; this could be framing, fit out, cladding or setouts to name a few. Sometimes these tasks can take all day but commonly the first job is done by lunch and then after a break we get into the second task of the day. Usually the day is done by 3:30pm after a quick site/tool clean up to ensure a safe and clean work area.

What's the best part of your job?
Personally I like using the power tools. This could be the nail gun during framing or circular saw when laying architraves to name a few

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I realised that i liked working outdoors and with my hands and wanted to pursue that. I worked in the mines which allowed me to gain experience working in a male dominated industry and then decided I wanted a career not just a job so chose to do an apprenticeship

Do you have any advice for young women picking a career?
Don't think you're limited or unable to complete something because of your gender.

What's the best thing about working in construction?
Every job is different and is a great mix of physical and mental skill

Who has inspired you in your career?
My older brother because he was already working in the industry and got me involved in projects from a young age
