the inside scoop…
What does a Project Engineer actually do? I take care of the internal fitout of a hospital, designing and building operating theatres, medical imaging and a number of other diverse spaces.
What does a day in your life at work look like? I get to the office, run through emails, get onsite - catchup with team and subcontractors and consultants to run through issues and come up with solutions. I get a status on the project, meet with client/consultant/subcontractor either onsite or in the office and wrap up for the day.
What's the best part of your job? I love working with a diverse range of people, I also like working in different areas of a project lifecycle and problem solving.
What made you realise construction could be for you? Friends told me about it in my second year of uni and decided to pick it up as an extra. I then got a job opportunity and that opened my eyes.
What would you tell your high school self about working in construction? Open your eyes and ask questions about how architecture relates to building. I had no idea about project management or even different engineering roles in highschool. Go out of your way to explore other areas outside the school
What do your friends and family think about working in construction? They didn't realise what construction really encompassed. They thought it was just guys on a construction site with tools and highvis. They did not think about how its run, what is required or even who did what. Its been very good to teach them about the industry, and also understand what I do day to day. They have then advised other family to explore options in the built environment.
