the inside scoop…

What does a Civil/Road Engineer actually do?
In a team, we produce drawings and reports for roads/highways to be constructed. My role includes lots of coordination with other disciplines including pavements and drainage.

What does a day in your life at work look like?
A typical day looks like: in the project office (separate from company office), client meetings to provide an update on the design, reviewing and checking drawings, doing calculations and providing technical input to the 3D modellers

What's the best part of your job?
It’s interesting to contribute to big, city shaping infrastructure.

What made you realise construction could be for you?
I grew up with a few aunts and uncles who are engineers. As someone who loved maths and physics, it seemed like a natural progression.

What's something that surprised you about working in construction?
All of the politics!

Who has inspired you in your career?
My old manager. She showed me what it looks like to have a fulfilling career, while balancing family/home life. Most importantly, she showed me that you don’t have to compromise your femininity to work (and thrive) in a male dominated environment.

Tell us about a favourite project you're working on.
Currently my favourite project I’m working on is the only project I’m working on - Western Harbour Tunnel. My learning curve has been steep as I get to work with great people across multiple companies.
